Event Introduction

Who Lives in Our Neighbourhood? | Pounding Dye Zine Workshop

To meet, to gather, to imprint.
To touch, to smell, to observe.

Who are the quiet neighbours growing alongside us?

Through the simple act of flower pounding, we will explore the shapes, textures, and natural pigments of plants that share our everyday spaces. By arranging leaves and flowers on paper and gently pounding them, we will transfer their colours and delicate forms onto the pages.

In this workshop, we invite you to slow down and get to know the weeds and wild plants around us through your senses. Using their botanical impressions, we will fold and create a small, one-of-a-kind zine — a collection of traces from our green neighbours.

A little book to carry the plants we often pass by, and a reminder to look a little closer.

About The Speaker

Ziqi Mao is a Chinese multidisciplinary designer and artist based in the Netherlands. Having lived and studied in China, Japan, and the Netherlands, her practice explores the relationships between nature, migration, personal memories, and a sense of belonging.

Currently working across textiles, natural dyeing, papermaking, and participatory installations, she uses hands-on processes to explore how materials can hold memories and connect us to our surroundings. Her recent work focuses on indigo-dyeing as a way of reflecting on migration, care, and the experience of putting down roots in a new place.

Through her workshops, she invites participants to slow down, engage with materials, and discover new connections between everyday life, personal stories, and the environment.
