ama-gum grew out of a felt need for a relatively unbiased space for writing (刻划, 새김) in its broadest sense. Its pages gather silence, sighs and intricate artistic and literary crafts from an intimate circle of friendship and ties. We embrace the fragmented thoughts of those like us—often swallowed by exhaustion and pessimism, struggling to stay afloat in societies that demand constant acts of translation. At the core of this zine is our insistence that no keywords or themes should be designated, and to work against the urge to synthesise and to reduce noise.
We want to initiate a publishing practice that mimics a playground. With this in mind, we published and printed the first issue of ama-gum, a zine that brings together poets, diarists, visual artists and young scholars. The contributors to this issue as well as the group members all share the experience of living and working in cultures different from the ones they were born into — a coincidence that began to weigh as the zine came together. The outcome is a collection of works that not only speak from such doubleness but takes up this irremediable condition of living, forging and rerouting, a momentum we discovered along the way.
