Spark was first an underground publication created during the years of the Great Famine.
After the Anti-Rightist Campaign of 1957, a group of students and faculty members from Lanzhou University were sent to rural Gansu for re-education through labor. There, they witnessed the devastation of the Great Leap Forward and the famine that followed. In response, they created Spark, an underground journal documenting hunger, poverty, and truths that were meant to be hidden.
Chinese independent documentary filmmaker Hu Jie spent years tracing this history and created the documentary Spark, bringing this nearly forgotten memory back into view.
