Event Introduction
Scheduled to coincide with WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 in late July to early August, Midnight Ambiguous Zone is a Sinophone queer cinema programme that uses the cultural atmosphere of the city as a backdrop for exploring queer experiences through emotional ambiguity, friendship, urban nightlife, and provisional forms of intimacy and belonging.
By situating itself within this broader public moment, the programme aims to create greater visibility for Sinophone queer narratives while opening critical dialogue around nightlife, visibility, and ambiguity as lived and cinematic categories.
The project consists of two components: a fiction film section and a short film program. On 26 July, in Nowhere Bookstore, we will screen the short film program, including:
當我望向你的時候 Will you Look At Me 20min | 黃樹立
In a deeply moving diary-like narrative, Shuli Huang confronts personal and family images with introspective thoughts, adding short, interspersed conversations with his mother. The gentleness of Super-8 footage and the ostensible happiness of the scenes, often awash with sunlight, are a harsh contrast with the complexity of their relationship, as they love but can’t understand each other. Thus, the film resonates as a heartbreaking farewell letter, in which, in between the lines, we see the gripping portrayal of a norm-obsessed culture that forces the protagonist to be nothing but a mere shadow, even in his own film.
親密雜音 Heart Murmurs | 9min | 張紫茵
Heart Murmurs is a poetic dialogue between the filmmaker and Dean, a young man living in Hong Kong. Reflecting on his experience of living with a congenital disability and HIV, Dean expresses his sense of self in the face of regular medical challenges.
PK皇后 China PK Queen | 37min | 魏建剛
Every day at 3pm Jessica starts his make-up to be ready for his performance at 7:30. He does not perform in a bar or in a theater but at home facing his mobile phone. He is an online professional Drag Queen. Each day of the week he gets online to perform and to receive “gifts” from his fans. Although he enjoys being a Drag Queen, he not only has to prove his talents and skills but also to fight against prejudices and discrimination. Even if the space for drag shows in China is constrained, he is always looking for opportunities to perform in front of live audiences.
悄悄告訴她 Swimming in the Dark | 27min | 陳品儒
It is a gloomy and burning summer. Wenqi, a junior swimmer at high school women’s swimming team, practices much more than before for the upcoming match. Pressure and self-isolation come alongside the practice, accumulating, and endangering her relationship with Xiaoan. Xiaoan has a sense of Wenqi’s isolation but can only try to approach again and again. However, every attempt seems to be pushing themselves away from each other.... Facing the future with the tension, will they be able to find their pace and move forward together, or will they end up leaving each other here?

About The Speaker
Diaspora East Cinema is an Amsterdam-based curatorial
collective and exchange platform active across the Netherlands. We focus on Sinophone, Southeast
Asian, and broader Asian images.
Our practices include curated screenings, workshops, Q&As, film, reviews, filmmaker interviews, and ongoing coverage of international film festivals.
For us, “diaspora” carries two meanings. First, it refers to the
independent lms we present that exist outside mainstream systems; as they travel across borders, they navigate different regions, histories, and political realities.
Our mission is to let them be seen.
“Diaspora” also speaks to the communities we aim to connect.
Our team is shaped by diverse migration paths, and our work is rooted in the lived experience of navigating complex cultural
contexts in Europe. Beyond the screen, we envision Diaspora East Cinema as a space for gathering and reflection—a place where people find resonance through the moving image.
